Akumal Without a Tour
Akumal on your own: the beach is public, the turtle circuits are guided only. The Tsuuk Akumal gate, the fees, getting there and the swims to book.
You do not need a tour to get to Akumal: the beach is public, and you can drive or take a taxi down Highway 307, walk onto the sand and swim. What you cannot do on your own is swim the turtle circuits: the refuge rules allow that only with a certified guide. So the do-it-yourself plan is to get yourself to Akumal and book just the guided swim, which costs from $45 a person with the Tsuuk Akumal park entry included (checked October 2026).
Getting there

Akumal is on Highway 307, the coast road of the Riviera Maya: about 37 km south of Playa del Carmen, about 27 km north of Tulum and about 90 km from Cancun airport. The beach, the bay and the swim operators are on the sea side of the highway; Akumal village is on the inland side. Driving yourself or taking a taxi gives you the most freedom with the time; the Akumal from Cancun guide covers the day trips with hotel pickup.
Getting onto the beach
Mexican law makes beaches public: under the Ley General de Bienes Nacionales they are common property that anyone may use. In practice there are two ways onto Akumal beach.
- The Tsuuk Akumal park gate. The main entrance is a private park, Tsuuk Akumal, which describes itself as a private organisation looking after the bay. Its price list charges foreign visitors US$7 with all services, and it opens from 8 am to 5 pm every day, with toilets, showers, changing rooms, lockers and lifeguards (the park’s own figures, checked October 2026). Most of the guided swims sold online include this entry.
- The public access. Centro Ecológico Akumal, the bay’s conservation group, describes a federally recognised public access to the sea south of the main bay.
The turtle swim, booked on its own
Once you are on the beach, the turtles are a guided swim away. These all start at Akumal, need no transport from a tour and lend the life jacket and snorkel:
| Swim | Time in the water | Included | Listing price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turtle snorkel with Tsuuk park entry (Amigo Tours LATAM) | The guided swim, then the beach | Park entry, lockers, showers | From $45 |
| Turtle swim with GoPro photos (Akumal Mayan Trips) | About an hour after a briefing | Park wristband, photos; lockers extra | From $34 in current promotion (usually $40) |
| Turtle snorkel from the beach (Tulum Snorkel Services) | About 45 minutes | All local fees and taxes | From $40 |
| Swim with a local guide, your group only | About 75 minutes | Beach access and environmental fees, a locker | From $43 |
| Private swim with photos (Green Life) | About an hour | Tsuuk park entry, photos and video | From $41 |
Listing prices: GetYourGuide checked October 2026; Viator checked October 2026. Green Life’s listing gives no refund on cancellation.
Compared with a day trip, this is the cheaper way: the swim alone costs a fraction of a day with the Tulum ruins and a cenote at $87 in current promotion (usually $108) (checked October 2026), though you pay your own way to Akumal.

What you can do without a guide
Outside the turtle circuits, Akumal is an ordinary public beach: swim, sit in the shade, eat in the village. North of the bay are Half Moon Bay and the Yal-Ku lagoon, where fresh water meets the sea; Yal-Ku has its own entrance and its own rules, so check them at the gate. One tour combines both: the guided turtle swim, then Yal-Ku and lunch.
Good to know
- The turtle circuits run from 9 am to 5 pm, and stop when the wind is over 25 km/h.
- Leave ordinary sunscreen at home: only biodegradable sunscreen is allowed in the bay. See what to bring.
- The federal conservation fee for the protected area is MXN 125 a person a day for 2026; check whether your swim includes it. The full set of rules is on the Akumal turtle rules page.
